Factsheet | The Dutch semiconductor sector: More Than One Success Story

The Netherlands is globally known for one semiconductor success story: the lithography for the most advanced chips. But that is just one of many. Behind that one name lies a complete ecosystem of 58,000 people and 33.6 billion euros, spread across the entire country and the entire value chain. A new ChipNL CC factsheet visualizes it.

Context

The Dutch semiconductor sector is one of the most advanced and complete in the world. In addition to internationally renowned industry leaders, the ecosystem includes equipment manufacturers, chip designers, photonics companies, material suppliers, knowledge institutions, and startups, spread across the whole country.

What's in the factsheet

  • 58,000+ people employed across the entire value chain

  • 33.6 billion euros economic value, of which almost 20 billion in equipment manufacturing

  • 5% of the world market and 33% of the European semiconductor industry

  • Regional distribution: Brainport Eindhoven (68%), Twente, Arnhem-Nijmegen, Delft-Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Groningen, and Almere

  • A new generation of companies in metrology, photonics, and edge AI with a combined value of more than 4 billion euros

Not one region, not one company

The strength lies in the distribution. Twente translates photonics and quantum into products (LioniX International, QuiX Quantum, PHIX). Delft is building the quantum stack (Qblox, QuantWare, QuTech). Arnhem-Nijmegen excels in chip design and power electronics (NXP, Nexperia, Ampleon). And a new generation of more than 4 billion euros is growing rapidly: Nearfield Instruments in metrology, SMART Photonics in integrated photonics, Axelera AI in edge AI.

European context

With a third of the European semiconductor industry, the Netherlands plays a key role within the European network of Chips Competence Centres and the European Chips Act. Moreover, the country is home to the only supplier of advanced lithography in the world.
